Spark Joy?

Getting ready to sell your home? Looking at moving into a new rental property? Setting up your new office space?

Marie Kondo's KonMari method of decluttering hit our shores via her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing and eponymous Netflix show.  Now people everywhere are tackling the dreaded task of decluttering and organising their wardrobes, garages, kitchens, study's and office spaces.

Why should I declutter before I sell my home?

  1. You can focus your buyers on whats important
  2. You can maximise the space you have in your home
  3. You will be more prepared for the move

Marie recommends organising items into categories such as clothing, books, paper, Komono (Miscellaneous) and sentimental items. Sub-categories can then be made from here such as 'pants, shirts, shoes etc.' from clothing. This way, items are tackled all at once. For example, you probably have clothes in your closet, under your bed and in your dresser. So instead of tackling a closet or a dresser, tackle your clothes as a whole, this way you can really see the amount you own.

KonMari states that you must touch every single item before you get rid of it. There’s no need to bring any “rational thinking” into the mix at this stage. You need to feel the item. Use your emotions and feelings to make a determination as to whether or not you’re going to keep something.

Lastly, you should have 3 piles, keep, donate and trash. Ensure you put your 'donate' and 'trash' pile straight in the car and dispose of it. The longer you hold onto it, the longer the negativity will linger in your home... or office.
