Windang is a suburb of 14km south of Wollongong on the southern tip of the peninsula, uniquely positioned between Lake Illawarra and the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Lake front homes and beach houses are popular in this suburb with its stunning lake foreshore and white sandy beaches a stone’s throw away!
Cafes, Restaurants & Bars
Although Windang is one of Wollongong’s smaller suburbs, it still caters to all your food and drink necessities, offering Thai, pizza, chicken, and kebab restaurants as well as an assortment of renowned cafes.
Club Windang and Lake Illawarra Hotel are popular spots for locals and visitors to dine-in, providing live music, TV sports, bistros, and bars.
Shops
Windang has a small supermarket that contains a grocery store, liquor store, boutique, and a pharmacy. Less than a ten-minute drive south you will find Warilla Grove Shopping Centre, a large shopping mall boasting a huge range of popular and niche stores, or fifteen minutes north is Wollongong’s main shopping mall Wollongong Central.
Things to Do
Windang is located right on the picturesque Lake Illawarra, a large coastal lagoon that attracts visitors from all over the country. Lake Illawarra is an aquatic enthusiast’s dream, offering sailing, water skiing, canoeing, bird watching and fishing. In Windang, you will also find ‘Holy Family Catholic Church’ and ‘Transforming Waters Church’.
If this is not enough, Windang is home to Windang Dive & Spearfishing and Illawarra Golf Complex, two activities that are very popular amongst the locals.
Schools
Windang Public School is the suburb’s local primary school, situated just back from Lake Illawarra. In the surrounding suburbs of Dapto, Shellharbour, and Wollongong there are several other public and private primary and high schools only a short drive away.
Parks
Edith Lacey Park and Wattle Street Park are Windang’s central parks, with Windang Foreshore Park and Pine Trees Park located on Lake Illawarra connected to Windang Beach Tourist Park.
Water
As well as the beautiful Lake Illawarra, Windang has its own beach located on its eastern side. To the north the beach becomes dog-friendly, making it a popular spot for people to bring their pets. Windang’s proximity also provides you with a choice of beaches that are only a short drive away in Shellharbour, Kiama, Wollongong or further north or south along Australia’s beautiful east coast.
If you are in the mood for a day trip, Windang is just over an hour away from world-famous national parks including the Royal National Park to the north and Jervis Bay National Park to the south.
Transport
Windang has a bus service running through it travelling north and south that mean you can travel to and from Wollongong CBD in a matter of minutes. Whilst Windang does not have its own train station, there are several nearby connecting residents to the Illawarra railway line which travels up and down the east coast with an express service that travels directly to Sydney.

The popular Australian garage rock band Hockey Dad are from Windang, often referencing their love for the suburb in their music.
