Woonona Public School, Woonona East Public School, and Woonona High School are the suburb’s local government schools. Almost every surrounding suburb has their own public primary and high school, with the additional option to choose from nearby independent schools such as Holy Spirit College, St Mary Star of the Sea College, or The Illawarra Grammar School.
Parks
There are plenty of open parks and playgrounds in Woonona, such as Nicholson Park and Strachan Park. Woonona Community Garden is also a great outdoor space for families to hang out.
Water
Woonona Beach offers an idyllic setting, more than satisfying locals and attracting visitors with its long stretches of perfect white sand and active waves. It is located 10km north of Wollongong’s CBD, stretching out north to Collins Point whilst Bellambi Beach is located in the southern part. Woonona beach features a large rock pool perfect for admiring the suburb’s scenic views.
If you are in the mood for a day trip, Woonona is around 1.5 hours away from world-famous national parks including the Royal National Park to the north and Jervis Bay National Park to the south.
Transport
Woonona has its own train station, multiple bus services and is directly linked to other Illawarra suburbs via the Princes Highway and Memorial Drive. To reach Sydney City, trains operate daily services from Thirroul Railway Station, only two stations north, or a ten minutes’ drives.
Fun Fact
The present-day site of Woonona, specifically Collins Point, was the first attempted landing in Australia by Captain James Cook on 28 April 1770. However, breaking surf prevented their landing party from getting ashore. A small plaque at Collins Rocks Headland commemorates this event.
