We’re excited to announce that Development Approval has been granted for a new co-living housing development with ground floor commercial uses in Port Kembla. This project represents a significant step forward in revitalising the heart of Port Kembla, where our clients TQM Design & Construct will transform a longstanding vacant site into an active, vibrant, and community-focused place.
Breathing New Life into a Vacant Site
The site, which has remained vacant for many years, occupies a prominent position within the Port Kembla town centre. Its redevelopment will deliver a much-needed renewal to the streetscape, creating a contemporary building that complements the area’s character. The proposal has been carefully designed by Design Workshop Australia (Applicant) to emulate the scale and form of the previous heritage-listed building that once stood on the site, respecting the area’s historical fabric while introducing a new and sustainable form of housing.
A Thoughtful Blend of Uses
At the ground level, the development will provide active commercial frontages, encouraging pedestrian activity and contributing to a more engaging and connected streetscape. These spaces will offer opportunities for local businesses, cafés, and services that enhance daily life for residents and visitors alike.
Above, the co-living component will provide modern, flexible housing options designed to meet the growing demand for affordable, community-oriented living that is suited to key worker housing. The design promotes shared amenity and social interaction, while offering privacy and comfort for individual residents — reflecting new ways of living that align with the changing needs of our communities.
Contributing to Port Kembla’s Ongoing Transformation
This project marks an important milestone in the ongoing renewal of Port Kembla. By reactivating an underutilised site and reinstating a building form that honours its history, the development will make a positive and lasting contribution to the town centre’s identity. It exemplifies the potential of sensitive urban infill development to balance heritage respect, social benefit, and design excellence.
We’re proud to have played a role in helping bring this vision to life — and look forward to seeing the project become a valued part of the Port Kembla community.
